Fitting and budgeting
Over and above the cost of your new flooring, fitting needs to be taken into account as a correctly installed flooring with a decent underlay will preserve your new carpets – keeping them looking and feeling their best for a long time.
A few Do’s and Don’t’s when considering fitting:
Underlay serves many purposes – the right underlay, correctly installed makes carpets comfortable to walk on whilst protecting the carpet from premature wear. Underlay can also provide sound and, where needed, heat insulation – conversely, if underfloor heating is being used, a Low Tog underlay is needed to avoid over insulating the floor
At Ray Randerson Carpets, from experience, we recommend and use Ball and Young Cloud 9, 9mm Cirrus underlay for most domestic carpets and Cloud 9, 6mm Radiance Low Tog underlay for areas with underfloor heating.
Where Wilton or Axminster carpets are being fitted, Felt and Crumb underlay is the preferred choice offering unparalleled levels of comfort and protection.
In situations where there are uneven floors, levelling the floor may be required – for concrete floors, latex based smoothing compounds can be used to create an even base for the carpet to lie on. On wooden floors it may be prudent to line the floor with ply before carpeting. Either way, you’ll be advised at the time of survey and quoted accordingly. Similarly on boarded floors, lining the floor with a paper membrane prior to fitting the underlay, prevents dust from gaps penetrating the carpet from underneath that can, in some circumstances, create visible lines in the carpet.
Having chosen your perfect carpet, it’s important to be sure it’s fitted perfectly so it looks and feels superb for many years to come. When it comes to underlay and fitting, it’s what you don’t see that counts!

Responsible waste management
Over the last 20 years we have established a policy of conscious environmental care in a bid to reduce our environmental impact through reducing waste, recycling materials where possible and minimising our energy consumption. Our vehicles are modern, up to date and well maintained to be as economical as they can be.
A degree of waste is inevitable though through planning and proper management, we do our best to minimise waste wherever we can. By their very nature, many flooring products are non bio-degradable. For over 25 years, all such waste is disposed of through Grundon, the UK’s largest privately owned waste management company. As licenced waste carriers, we can remove all waste associated with the installation of your new carpets or flooring, including the disposal of any old carpet. Carpet that cannot be recycled can be processed and pelleted for fuelling powerstations.
Wildlife conservation and regeneration at Oxbow Farm
When we moved to Oxbow Farm nearly 20 years ago, we made a conscious decision to regenerate and rejuvenate areas of sparse fallow land on the farm thereby creating habitats for all manner of wild life. We dug a lake, planted a 17 acre wood of hawthorns, chestnuts, beech, oak, cherry, birch, ash and willow and made headland paths for walking and riding, bordered by game crops. This, now, semi-mature landscape is home to countless species of birds, animals, fish, insects, and butterflies – a whole ecosystem in itself and a haven for visitors too. Importantly, this stewardship of the landscape, besides bringing life and beauty to an otherwise barren area, goes some way to mitigate our environmental impact.

Why are there different underlays available?
As with most things in life a good foundation is essential for a successful outcome and that is so true where carpets are concerned. A correctly specified and fitted underlay will extend the life of your flooring keeping it looking and feeling good for many years. Room size, carpet type and location all play a part in making the right choice. For areas with underfloor heating, low tog underlay can be specified to minimise the insulating effect. In areas where airborne noise is a consideration, sound attenuating underlayment may be specified.
Can I use my existing underlay?
We’d strongly recommend not! New carpet – new underlay is the golden rule, why? – well, over time, underlay can compress and become less resilient in high traffic areas or where furniture has been standing. This reduces performance and causes the carpet to flatten more quickly – new underlay better supports new carpet.
Can we soundproof our appartment floor before carpeting?
Sound transmission in buildings results from both airborne and impact noise sources. Airborne noise is that from people talking, radios, TV’s and the like and impact noise is from things being dropped, people walking, moving furniture etc. Depending on the type of floor and degree of attenuation required, Acoustilay flooring or Maxiboard from SRS Ltd can be fitted prior to carpets being laid.
